About the Author

A life spent listening for stories.

Margaret Ellison is the author of six books, including the nationally bestselling The Salt Garden and the Edgar-nominated mystery A Quiet Tide. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, and Ploughshares, and has been translated into fourteen languages.

She writes from a converted boathouse on the coast of Maine, where she lives with far too many houseplants and one opinionated cat. She teaches an annual fiction workshop and appears at book festivals across the country each spring.

What the critics say

“Ellison has an unmatched ability to find the extraordinary hiding inside ordinary lives. Every one of her novels feels like coming home to a house you didn't know you owned.”

The Atlantic Review

On The Salt Garden

“A writer of rare patience and precision. Her sentences are rooms you want to live in — every detail placed with intention.”

Booklist

Starred review, Letters from the Orchard

“From her debut story collection to her latest novel, Ellison has quietly built one of the most consistent bodies of work in contemporary fiction.”
